Moss on lawns will only occur if the soil is compacted and/or there is little or no air movement to help dry out the soil surface. Spiking with a garden fork or hollow tining (the removal of soil cores) in spring and autumn will relieve compaction. Then dress with coarse sand and brush into the holes to keep them open. This encourages roots to grow to a greater depth and allows water to move down to where it can be used more effectively by the plant – not wallowing on the surface where it will benefit moss.

The main principle of organic lawncare is not only to feed your grass, but also the soil it is growing in using a range of natural products. If you want a pest free lawn but don’t like using man-made chemicals then biological and natural control is for you. Our range contains natural products as well as microscopic nematodes that are watered onto the lawn – and that’s all you have to do. Leave the rest to the nematodes!

Ignoring worm casts on your lawn by squashing them flat with your mower will create an uneven surface, smother existing grass and provide an ideal seed bed for weeds to grow in. In recent years products to control casting worms have been withdrawn. However, it is common knowledge and in the public domain that casting worms do not favour acidic soils. So when a soil acidifier is applied to the lawn they will burrow deeper into the soil – without coming to any harm – reducing casts on the surface. It may well be necessary to make two or three applications in the autumn and spring, especially if there is a lot of vegetative matter (thatch) in the soil and/or the lawn is growing on an alkaline (chalk or limestone) soil. Prevention is always better than cure and we recommend that an application of Sulphurlawn Chips or Spray-on is made before the casts become a problem.
